Deep within our bodies and minds lie wordless stories about who we are and how we came to be this way. Emotional trauma can change these inner stories, causing ongoing suffering.
This presentation introduces a model for healing emotional trauma by revising these inner stories. It explores seven distinct types of inner stories and describes how each contributes to greater self-understanding, personal growth, and wellbeing.

The Archetypal Death Parent symbolises traumatising attitudes stemming from those who we expect to nurture us, including parents, teachers, community leaders, and ourselves.
One form the Archetypal Death Parent can take is ‘toxic shame,’ a mistaken and often unconscious belief of being intrinsically flawed and unworthy of love. This belief distorts our relationships with ourselves and others. It creates escalating suffering.
This presentation draws on the work of Marion Woodman, the myth of Medusa, evolution, psychology and lived experiences, to bring consciousness to these dynamics.

Western culture idealises motherly love, making it difficult to understand maternal neglect, abuse and, most tragically all, infanticide. The lack of understanding means hostile mothers are often perceived as unnatural or mentally ill.
This presentation questions the idealised view of motherhood, by exploring its evolutionary underpinnings. It aims to support change in affected mothers, and to facilitate healing in those who have suffered from a hostile mother, by offering a more nuanced and compassionate understanding of the dynamics involved.

Shame is the emotion which evolved to warn us when our own behaviour endangers important relationships. Humans need support to survive, so this warning is valuable. However, shame becomes toxic when it calcifies into the frightening conviction that we are irremeably inadequate, and thus intrinsically unworthy of relationships & in constant danger of being abandoned
This presentation aims to create greater awareness of toxic shame and the suffering it creates by drawing on evolution, anthropology, psychology and lived experience.
